One of my happiest childhood memories is visiting the local milk bar (remember them?) with 50 cents to get a bag of lollies. I recall the great anticipation that led up to this moment; the shiny silver coins Mum would give me, and the yummy selection that promised to delight. I always had trouble deciding which lollies to buy, and inevitably ended up with a mixed bag. But I was never disappointed.
When I consider my blog, I liken it to a mixed bag of lollies. It’s not always bright, colourful and “fun” like a freckle. It is sometimes more of a banana, and other times just a plain old milk bottle. All the blogging experts (yes, there are blogging experts just as there are parenting experts) tell me I need to be just one variety. They say parents don’t want mixed bags, they want one flavour or things get too “confusing.” But I disagree. Where’s the fun in dipping into a bag of caramel swirls, when really what you need is the gummy teeth! As Forrest Gump famously said, “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.”
It turns out I agree with Forrest Gump. Parenting is not all rainbows and daisy chains, much as the advertisers of nappy brands and cleaning products would have us believe. Just ask any parent of a two-year-old who has never slept through the night, given up their day nap, is refusing to toilet train and requires more tactical negotiation than the UN when you mistakenly cut their sandwich into triangles instead of squares!
The truth is parenting is made of hey days and grey days. And a lot of average (milk bottle) days in between. And that’s what I try to create on this blog, a realistic narrative of the hurly burly of family life. What I love about parenting is the breadth of experiences we encounter every day. Most of family life is unscripted and we’ve constantly got our L-plates on, because things are always changing. I write about the ups and downs, the inspiring and the confronting, the mind-numbing and the gob-smacking!
Speaking of gob-smacking, you will notice that Not another slippery dip has had a makeover. After almost three years of blogging, and 200 posts, I decided it was time to dust it off and relaunch. I hope you like my new look! I have updated my logo and given my website a facelift.
But what hasn’t changed is my content. I am still a mixed bag. I will continue to bring you blog posts that explore all kinds of topics, including:
- Pregnancy & Parenting
- The nuanced experience of motherhood
- Self-exploration & balance
- The great need to slow down
- The importance of play in a child’s life
- How to worry and stress less (a great aspiration of mine)
- How to reconcile the mundane with the momentous!
I hope you’re a mixed bag kinda person too. Who wants to be limited to just one variety? Life is too exciting for that. What you’ll get here is an assortment of stories but what will remain consistent is my flavour; honesty.
To celebrate NASD’s relaunch, the lovely team at elk are offering you the chance to win a $100 gift voucher. Entering couldn’t be easier.
