At no other stage in your life do you feel a greater respect and appreciation for your mum than when you become a mum yourself. Becoming a mum brings into focus the dedication, love and sacrifices that you’re own mum made. On this mother’s day I would like to dedicate this post to my mum – a woman who tirelessly put her children’s needs ahead of her own, and whose mothering abilities I aspire to match. It’s a post about thanks.

Is it just me or is this so called “mummy wars” subject getting tired and boring. I can’t help but think that every time an article is printed and mentions “mummy wars” that it just perpetuates the notion that mums are in battle with one another over their choices.

Yesterday this article by Alex Carlton fired up a lot of people. It paints a picture that “around the country, tertiary-educated women who grew up steeped in girl power and feminism have turned their backs on a career.” The article suggests that educated, intelligent women are ditching the boardroom in masses to stay at home and raise children in between quilting, baking and blogging….

Why putting out the garbage may damage your sex life

Guys – forget the sentiment that doing the dishes is like foreplay. Contrary to previous studies and relationship advice, helping your wife cook and clean will not increase your chances of sex.

New research from sociologists at the University of Washington has found married men and women who divide household chores in traditional ways report having more sex than couples who share so-called men’s and women’s work.

The findings come from a national survey of about 4,500 heterosexual married U.S. couples participating in the National Survey of Families and Households. The data were collected from 1992 to 1994, the most recent large-scale survey available that measured sexual frequency in married couples. The research debunks the common perception that men who share the domestic bliss will be rewarded in the bedroom….

A fruit tree for the birth of a baby

A fresh peach, still warm from the sun!

I have a very special tree in my garden. Actually, I have three. But let me tell you about the first one.

For the birth of my first daughter, a dear friend of mine gave me a small peach tree to welcome her into the world. Amongst all the gorgeous clothes, soft toys and nursery items she received, this tree was unique. I remember thinking my friend was so clever to give a gift that would grow alongside my daughter. And it has.

This spring, my daughter’s peach tree flowered – a sign of fruit to follow. Over the spring, we had the loveliest time watering the tree and observing the natural life cycle of plants. Being three and a half, this was the first year my daughter really understood that this was her tree and a very special gift she had received….

The scent and sentiment of Christmas

Christmas is only days away and the retailers and marketers are rallying to convince us that we must spend money on the perfect gift.

Whilst contemplating what to give my children this Christmas I tried to remember the best present I ever received as a child. With the exception of my first tennis racket I couldn’t think of a single thing. What I could remember, however, was a Christmas experience, which became an annual ritual and remains one of my most cherished childhood memories.

A generation on, I still remember the evening unfolding with perfect clarity. A few nights before Christmas, just as dusk turned to night, our father would bundle up my four sisters and I and drive us into the city. To share an experience alone with our dad was a great novelty for the five of us. He worked six days a week and went back to the office most nights after dinner. But at Christmas time we shared two important activities with him: we would go and see the Myer windows and then visit his office.
